The Maltese barge AMT Explorer has capsized and sunk some 50 miles southwest of Sardinia carrying € 28 million worth of cables for North Sea windfarms.

The barge, owned by Augustea Anchor Marine Transportation, was towed by Repasa's tug Red Husky and was sailing from Naples to Bremerhaven. All crew were saved. The cause of the accident is still unknown.

Reports say Smit Salvage has been contracted to perform salvage works. It is hoped at least the cables, produced by Prysmian, can be saved.
