Shipyard De Hoop has delivered the Scenic Gem, a custom built 110 metre river cruise ship, to Australian ship owner Scenic Tours.

The order for the ship was part of a contract for three ships signed at the end of 2012. Earlier, Shipyard De Hoop delivered the other two ships, the 135 metre river cruisers Emerald Sky and Emerald Star, to Emerald Waterways, a related Australian ship owner.

Passing Height-Limiting Obstacles

The 110 metre long Scenic Gem was designed to the client's wishes and offers accommodation for 130 passengers in 65 cabins. The 2.5 deck river cruiser is characterised by a reduced height in the front part of the accommodation, which allows the deck equipment, furniture and wheelhouse to stay in place when passing height-limiting obstacles. To lower the vessel, ballastwater needs to be taken in and the masts can be lowered.

Stricter Rules to Comply with

Although the ship was based on De Hoop's other river cruisers, the unique sailing area of the Scenic Gem, the River Seine up to Honfleur, posed a number of additional demands, which led to the complete re-evaluation of the design. Honfleur is close to the estuary of the river and France's coastal waters, which means different rules apply. These rules are stricter than for ships that solely sail on inland waters and impact the strength of the construction, freeboard, watertight division, damage stability and the required rescue equipment on board. As the ship now complies with these stricter guidelines, it can also sail on most of the other European rivers, canals and lakes.
