Zeeland Seaports strives to stimulate transport by inland ships and rail instead of by road. And with result: inland shipping in particular has become more popular in this area of the Netherlands.
This becomes clear from the port authority's recent modal split figures.
Hinterland Transport
To decrease road transport, Zeeland Seaports wants hinterland transport to take place by rail and inland or coastal shipping as much as possible. The latest figures show that currently, 51 per cent of hinterland transport is by inland ships. Therefore, Zeeland Seaports' efforts to make inland shipping more attractive, such as new waiting docks, shore power supply and wifi, seem to have the desired effect.
Intermodal Planner
Yet, there is still work to be done to further improve the hinterland connections. In the coming years, new locks will be built at Terneuzen as well as the Sluiskil tunnel. Together with the companies in and around the ports, the port authority als undertakes its own initiatives. One of the most recent of which is the launch of the website www.intermodalplanner.eu. With this online planner, transporting companies can determine which combination of multimodal transport are available to them in the Zeeland ports.
Zeeland Seaports is one of the few sea ports in the Benelux that calculates modal split in terms of the flow of goods. Many ports limit themselves to container transport as containers are easier to track than other goods.
