Black Carbon Reduction, water repellent spray and degassing are just three of the thirteen topics that will be discussed at the Maritime Symposium 2014, which is all about "Improvement and Innovation".

The Maritime Symposium takes place Tuesday 22 April at the STC-Group in Rotterdam and is organised by Maritime Officer students of the Rotterdam Mainport University of Applied Sciences (part of the STC-Group).

The students will present the findings of ten high profile maritime innovation research projects that they have connducted in the past year. Key-note speaker is Kees Joosten (programme director at the Centre of Expertise Sustainable Mainport Innovation).

The Thirteen Research Projects

  1. Water Repellent Spray
How can water repellent spray decrease the influence of seawater on deck cargo? The application of water-repellent spray can improve the characteristics of sea-going ships and their cargoes.
  2. Degassing
How can vessels degas their tanks without releasing harmful gases into the atmosphere? Innovative, effective, economical and safest way to degas cargo tanks and to comply with the new legislation coming in the near future.
  3. Alternative Berthing
How can the efficiency of the berthing process be improved? Multiple alternative and innovative ways of berthing will be presented.
  4. Black Carbon Reduction
How can black carbon emission be reduced in diesel engines on board of sea going vessels? Hot IMO-Topic!
  5. Spark Ignited MDO
How can spark-ignition be applied in modern diesel engines to reduce the emission? Despite the skepticism of "the industry": 5 young ladies ( Maritime Officer students) will  present the "holy grail" of maritime research.
  6. Heated Container Cover
What is the most practical solution to prevent ice from growing on a vessel? Another hot topic, now arctic sailing is here to stay!
  7. Renewing the Emergency Beacon
How can the SART and the EPIRB be integrated and their deployment and operation be made more autonomous and effective? Safety-enhancing solutions for emergency situations.
  8. Cool Container Shipping
How can frozen cargo be transported in the most optimal way at constant temperature and without energy usage by freezing on the shore?
  9. Sailing without Ballast Water
How can a ship sail efficiently without ballast water? Use upthrust (air) instead of "ballastwaterweight". That will do it!
  10. The Navigable Northpole
How can a device which measures the ice thickness contribute to making Arctic sailing safer for ships? From Dalian to Rotterdam via the Polar route!
  11. Augmented Reality – AR
How can safety on board be improved using Augmented Reality? AR is here to stay.
  12. Contra-Rotating Propellers
How can contra-rotating propellers increase the efficiency of commercial shipping? Create more efficiency and less emission. Why not use this system on a wider scale?
  13. Turning Electricity into Gas
How can electricity be converted into natural gas and use this as fuel for the auxiliaries and main engines onboard vessels? Spectacular innovation – create your own electric power and convert it into fuel!
