After being nominated but not winning the award last year, this year Kranendonk Production Systems did take home the HME Maritime Innovation Award. And they could not be more surprised.
The employee on stage was rendered near speechless, but did state that as a non-maritime company, they never expected to win a maritime award. Even though they were also nominated last year fot their “pipe shop”. This year, the company entered the “Edge Preparation System”, and with success.
They received the award from the hands of jury president Pim van Gulpen.
Edge Preparation System
To improve the quality of coatings in shipbuilding, IMO PSPC demands the preparation (rounding) of plate edges. Automation of this process requires an adaptive machine that perfectly follows plate contours. Kranendonk’s Edge Preparation System can do this and prepares edges of plates for coating with 2R grinding, according to PSPC regulations.
Other Nominees
Veth Propulsion entered the Hybrid Drive. This drive has two different drives: diesel-direct en diesel/LNG-electric. Both propulsion systems can be used within their optimum yield curves and the asynchronous electric motor can also be used as a generator.
Van Oossanen’s Hull Vane was the other nominee. The Hull Vane consists of a foil positioned below the hull of a ship or yacht in a specific location by means of struts or sponsons. The device changes the pressure distribution on the hull thereby reducing the resistance. The foil also generates a thrust force.
HME Maritime Innovation Award
The HME Maritime Innovation Award is awarded to the most innovative Dutch maritime supplier every year and is always awarded during the Maritime Awards Gala. The gala took place 31 October in Rijswijk, the Netherlands.
