Brussels will donate at least 80 million euros to the Netherlands this year for infrastructure projects. Europe will subsidise studies for the new large lock in IJmuiden, the rail terminal for Greenport Venlo and much more.
The money for the Dutch projects comes from the European subsidy programme for the trans-European transport network (TEN-T). This programme intends to make the European Union into one transport network. The projects have been submitted by the Dutch Ministry for Infrastructure and the Environment (I&E). The exact amounts will be determined in September.
Greenport Venlo and APM Terminals
In terms of transport of goods 681,000 euros will be contributed to a study for a new rail terminal for Greenport Venlo. The new terminal will become an important link in the TEN-T rail network.
In addition, 5.5 million euros will be made available for improving transhipment at APM Terminals at Maasvlakte 2. This will allow more goods to be transported to the hinterland by water and rail.
ERMTS
The Port of Rotterdam will receive 900,000 to realise the European rail safety system ERTMS on the new tracks of Maasvlakte 2. Mitsui Rail Capital will be subsidised with 1 million euros to upgrade their locomotives with ERTMS for use on TEN-T corridors.
LNG Transport
In addition, LNG transport between Rotterdam and Gothenburg will be stimulated with a 36.8 million subsidy.
Ministry Projects
The Ministry itself will also receive TEN-T funds. It will receive a 2.7 million euros subsidy for the plan of study for the new lock in IJmuiden. For Rijkswaterstaat’s ANNA ICT project, which will streamline the maritime information flow, 18.5 million will be made available. The RIS traffic management project for inland shipping will receive 1.4 million. In terms of people transport, the project Zuidas-Dok will receive 2.5 million.
The Netherlands also benefits from subsidies for projects conducted together with other countries, such as
- Creating a European platform for intelligent transport systems.
- An LNG Masterplan for the Rhine, Main and Donau.
- Developing a river information system on the Westerschelde.
- A pilot for LNG infrastructure for shipping on the Baltic Sea.
For these projects nearly 72 million euros will be made available.
