Allard Castelein will become Chief Executive of the Port of Rotterdam Authority on 1 January. Castelein (1958), who was born and bred in Rotterdam, is currently Vice President Environment at Royal Dutch Shell.

The two shareholders (the Municipality of Rotterdam and the State) have appointed Castelein (picture) to succeed Hans Smits, who will be leaving the Port Authority at the end of December, after a period of nine years. Smits will become Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Gasunie.

Allard Castelein has been employed by Shell since 1987 where he occupied a variety of management positions in such areas as commerce, production and strategy. Castelein is currently responsible for all environmental aspects of Royal Dutch Shell’s global operations. In the past 26 years, Castelein has worked in a variety of different business units in such locations as Rotterdam, London, the Middle East and the Far East.
