Key players from Dutch maritime industry, united in Nederland Maritiem Land (NML), beseech the Government to allow private security on board Dutch ships as soon as possible.
In April, the Cabinet acknowledged that the Royal Navy’s Vessel Protection Detachments (VPDs) cannot always provide sufficient protection. The cabinet intends to present Parliament with a law draft that allows private security on board ships.
Leaving the Dutch Flag
The Netherlands is one of the few countries that prohibits the use of private security. As a result an increasing number of ship owners no longer wish to sail under the Dutch flag. Because other countries do allow (flexible and affordable) private security, Dutch competitiveness suffers. Hence NML urges the Government to make haste with their new legislation.
NML has a wide range of participants such as the Port of Rotterdam, Royal Navy, Maritiem Kennis Centrum, Holland Shipbuilding Association, IRO, KVNR, Hiswa, Marin, IHC Merwede, Damen Shipyards, and many more.
