Inland vessel owners sailing in and around the Rotterdam port area can apply for a subsidy to reduce their ships’ emissions. The South-Holland province, the city of Rotterdam and city area Rotterdam together invest € 6.2 million in cleaner inland shipping.

Inland ship owners can apply for the “Milieumaatregelen binnenvaart Zuid-Holland” (environmental measures inland shipping South Holland) as of 1 July. By reducing the ships’ emissions air quality in the area will be improved. About 25 per cent of the NOx-concentration and about 13 per cent of the particulate matter concentration in and around the port of Rotterdam.

Scrubbers and Catalysts

Measures that reduce NOx to be considered are after treatement systems such as scrubbers and  a switch to alternative fuels such as LNG. The bigger the effect of the measure on the air qualitym the higher the subsidy. For instance, when acquiring an scr-catalyst, purchase, maintenance and consumption cost can be subsidised.

HME will conduct the programme for the province. For more information, please visit www.noxvrij.nl (in Dutch).

In 2015 the Netherlands has to meet European air quality norms. To meet these norms, the “Nationaal Samenwerkingsprogramma Luchtkwaliteit (NSL)” has been started and money was made available for regional measures.
