Two cargo ships collided this morning in Greek waters. Two crew members have been confirmed dead, eight are still missing.

The drowned and missing crew were all on board the cargo ship Pirireis, sailing under a Cook Islands flag. The ship sunk after it collided with the Consouth about 75 nautical miles off the islet of Sapienza. The ConSouth, sailing under an Antigua-Barbuda flag, was not seriously damaged and its crew of 16 was reported safe. The Consouth recovered the two drowned crew members.

Search and Rescue Operation

The Pirireis had a crew of seventeen. Seven were saved, two drowned, the other eight are still missing. Two coastguard vessels, a navy helicopter and an airplane take part in a search and rescue mission for the missing crew. Five ships sailing in the area also offered assistance.

Allegedly, the Pirireis, owned by the Turkish shipping firm Emiroglu, was transporting fertilisers from Algeria to Ukraine. Authorities are checking for any pollution from the sunken ship. As yet no cause is known as weather conditions were good.
