As piracy continues to be a threat, ever more ship owners turn to commercial security teams to protect their ships. Flag states are therefore implementing stricter standards and regulations for these teams (if allowed at all). Now, special counter-piracy training programmes are available to help meet these standards.

One of the companies participating in such a programme is Advanfort, a global provider of armed security teams. This company has a number of its vessel security officers participating in the first-ever counter-piracy training programme for corporations working in the merchant marine environment. Offered by the National Maritime Law Enforcement Academy (NMLEA) and supported by the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAGS), the course is a step forward in meeting growing international demands for standardising (and professionalising) counter-piracy security teams.

For more information about these programmes, please visit the NMLEA website.
