Team 5 "Turbo Poliep" of TU Delft designed and built the fastest radio controlled model sailing boat of the Netherlands. On 18 January, the team won the design and sailing contest out of fourteen competing teams from TU Delft and STC University of Applied Sciences. The contest finished with a race in the Shallow Water Basin at Marin in Wageningen.

The winning team, formed by Jorrit van Rhijn, Sander van der Horst, Laurens Kranendonk, Joost Nijhoff, designed a catamaran with two wingsails, creating a well balanced yacht to win the race.

Innovation Prize

The design "Argolite" by team 7, won the Innovation Prize. Jeremy van Mourik Broekman, Mark Roth, Jonathan van der Helm en Irfan Dogan, also designed a twin wingsail catamaran. However, their innovative wing design (Omer wingsail) enabled adaptation of the wingsail to the twisted flow of the windfield. Moreover, the construction was of a high standard.

Speed, Turning Ability and Innovation

In the race, the sailing boats were assessed for speed, turning ability and innovation and had to race on three tracks. The boats had to show they are not only fast on a straight track, but could also rapidly round buoys. “Almost everything was permitted for the design and construction,” says Rogier Eggers, Project Manager at Marin and co-organiser of the design and sailing contest. “Every year the rules are adapted slightly to prevent copying from previous year. This year there was only a limitation to the sail surface (max. 0.85 m2) and the depth of the facility (0.75 m) to stimulate the designs at restricted water depth and area for propulsion by means of sails.

The race is part of a minor course ‘Sailing Yachts’ that students can follow at TU Delft and STC University of Applied Sciences.
