Cargo ship the Baltic Ace sunk after colliding with another cargo ship, the Corvus J, on the North Sea yesterday. Four people have died and a further seven are still missing with little hope of recovering them alive.

The Baltic Ace collided with the other ship on Wednesday night and sank almost immediately after. The Corvus J suffered a lot of damage but did not make water. There were 24 people on board the Baltic Ace, thirteen of which were rescued from the ship.

A rescue mission was launched immediately with three lifeboats of the Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution (KNRM), two navy vessels, four helicopters and a Coastguard airplane. Ships in the area also joined the search. The search was abandoned around 2 am. Weather permitting, the search for the seven missing crew members will be continued today. The chance they are found alive is considered slim to none.
