Huisman Equipment takes home the Maritime Innovation Award for the Dual Multi-Purpose Tower (DMPT) after 'knocking out the other nominees' according to jury chairman Cdr. (t)b.d. Pim van Gulpen. The DMPT is a drill tower without the limitations of a traditional drilling rig (closed truss structure) when handling drilling equipment. The drilling process becomes significantly more efficient, safer and easier in logistics.

The award was presented at the Maritime Awards Gala on 8 November 2012 at the Cruise Terminal in Rotterdam.

Won by a Knock-out

Although jury chairman Cdr. (t)b.d. P. van Gulpen claimed Huisman had won by a knock-out, the other nominees were also praised for their innovative efoorts. The other nominees were:

  • Greenforce Ball Joint by Vosta LMG: Vosta LMG was nominated for the development of the Greenforce Ball Joint. This is a revolutionary design of a ball joint for the use in floating pipelines behind cutter suction dredgers. The new design reduces costs and reaches several advantages for the environment.
  • Ship Energy Management System by Imtech Marine & Offshore: Imtech Marine & Offshore owed its nomination to the intelligent Ship Energy Management System. Through intelligent automation the Ship Energy Management System controls the deployment of hybrid energy sources, without the intervention of the captain. This way it achieves continuously the most optimal, energy-efficient, emission reducing and cost-effective sailing profile.
  • Pipe Shop by Kranendonk Production Systems: Kranendonk Production Systems was nominated for the development of the robotic Pipe Shop. This is the first robot system in the world which automatically joins flanges and tubes. From CAD-drawings to joint tubes, all in a single system.
