The Marine Technology Society Dynamic Positioning Committee has honoured Dr Steven Cargill, one of GL Noble Denton's leading technical authorities, with its 2012 Distinguished Achievement Award.
The prize recognises Cargill's contribution to the field of dynamic positioning (DP) throughout his 28-year career within the oil and gas industry. It pays tribute to his success in developing important technical standards on failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) for DP systems, and his input to a range of international guideline documents published by the Marine Technology Society.
Pragmatic Technical Solutions
Described to have a talent for translating his profound knowledge into understandable terms for non-specialists, Cargill is one of twelve DP professionals to have been honoured with a Distinguished Achievement Award since 2001. During a special ceremony to mark the occasion in Houston, DP founder Howard Shatto characterised Cargill as an active coach and mentor to industry professionals. He also praised him for his ability to empathise with contrasting industry opinions, and turn differing views into pragmatic technical solutions that benefit the sector.
DP Systems Crucial for Deepwater Environments
Commenting on his receipt of the Award, Cargill said: ‘It is a great honour to have been recognised for my work in dynamic positioning. As the oil and gas industry increases its activity in deepwater environments, it is crucial that operators are able to rely on safe and reliable DP systems. This can be achieved if the industry continues to collaborate and innovate through strong, independent associations such as the Marine Technology Society, and I am proud to be a member of a group of people who share these values.’
Cargill’s Work at GL Noble Denton
Based at GL Noble Denton's DP Centre of Technical Excellence in Aberdeen, Cargill supports the company's established DP practices around the world. He provides technical advice on the safety, integrity and performance of DP systems, and has been involved in a number of high-profile projects, covering DP design review, redundancy analysis, FMEA and developing redundancy concepts.
