The classification society Germanischer Lloyd (GL) has honoured five young engineers for their outstanding scientific research. The awards presentation for the best theses on "Innovative Ideas to Increase the Efficiency of Ships and/or their Operation" was held at the Maritime Summer Meeting in Kiel for the fifth time. The initiative aims to support and reward the best young engineers in the maritime field and demonstrate how varied and exciting the engineering profession can be.
Torsten Schramm, Chief Operating Officer of the GL Group, presented the prizes which range in value from 1000 to 3000 euros to the deserving winners from Norway, Italy and Germany. The first prize was awarded to Eirik Bøckmann for his research on "Wind Turbine Propulsion of Ships". Mr Bøckmann studies at the University of Trondheim. The second prize went to Valerio Capurso, Giovanni Colotto and Giorgio Guadagna, from the University of Genoa, who submitted their work: "Ship Energy Efficiency in terms of Optimum Trim and Speed Reduction Policy: a methodology and a tool for the decision making process". Sven Faustmann from the Bremen University of Applied Sciences received the third prize for his thesis on the optimisation of the waterproof subdivision of a mega yacht concept design.
