Companies in the North Sea Canal Area contributing to the sustainable development of the port area can be granted a subsidy. Recently, the port of Amsterdam rewarded four companies using the special Sustainability and Innovation Fund. The next tender will be from 1 September to 1 November 2012.
Spring 2012 marked the beginning of the sixth tender period of this fund. The companies Water Afval Verwerking BV, Zonnepanelendelen BV and Spliethoff’s Bevrachtingskantoor BV in Amsterdam and Fertilizer4You in IJmuiden will together receive € 622,381 for the sustainable projects they have presented. The companies will pay most of the investment costs involved. The purpose of the port of Amsterdam’s contribution is to promote activities making projects possible.
The subsidy is used to set up the following projects:
– Mobile wastewater separator by Water Afval Verwerking BV
– Investment system by Zonnepanelendelen BV
– Gas washer by Spliethoff’s Bevrachtingskantoor BV
– Production line for organic fertilisers by Fertilizer4You
Inventive and Efficient
Port CEO Dertje Meijer: ‘Sustainable development means we get to be even more inventive and more efficient. The fund challenges entrepreneurs across the North Sea Canal Area to come up with innovative concepts, to use space more efficiently, reduce the number of technical obstacles during storage and transhipment activities, reuse waste products and logistics systems pushing down the number of transportations. The Spliethoff project is a very good example. Spliethoff in Amsterdam is one of the first ship owners to clean ship engines’ exhaust fumes using a closed system. Residuals will no longer be discharged on the seawater. Instead, they will be collected and delivered to the port for further processing. It is a cost-efficient way of meeting future environmental requirements. Short sea route transportation will allow Spliethoff to continue to compete with road transport companies in the future.’
In five previous tenders the Port of Amsterdam honoured eighteen requests. Five requests were submitted in the sixth tender period; four were accepted.
