Zanzibar authorities have charged three people with manslaughter for the sinking of a ferry last week. Police states 144 people died in the accident. So far, 104 bodies have been recovered.

The captain, owner and a member of the board of the shipping company have been charged with man slaughter. The case will start on 7 August. The suspects were released on bail.

The ship MV Skagit carrying 290 passengers capsized last week in between Tanzania’s mainland and Zanzibar. Police said last week that there is no hope of the 40 missing passengers being found alive. Among the dead were two Dutch tourists.

On 23 July, Hamad Masoud Hamad, Minister for Marine Transportation resigned from his position. Within a year approximately 350 people have lost their lives in two ship disasters.
