According to the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, people researching the cause of the Costa Concordia disaster have claimed to have found many defects onboard the cruise ship that ran aground and capsized off the coast of Italy in January. 32 people were killed in the accident.

Some of the researchers’ findings include:
– The watertight doors that should have been closed were open ‘to facilitate working staff moving through the corridors’, according to officers on board. After the collision, this caused panic.
– the charts onboard were unapproved

– a number of instruments was defective, the worst of which concerns the “black box” that fails to have made any recordings after 23.26 hours. This means there is also no record of the evacuation.

All findings of the technical research will be presented during a court hearing on 21 July. The ship’s captain and several other suspects may face criminal proceedings.
