This weekend, a Turkish cargo carrier capsized near the Greek island Zakynthos. The captain was killed and three of the crew of nine remain missing. All persons on board were Turkish.
The ship, carrying olive pits, was on its way from Zakynthos to Turkey when it capsized on the Ionian Sea. Shifting cargo is suspected to be the cause of the accident. How this could happen remains unclear: according to the Greek coastguard weather conditions were good.
Oil Onboard
Rescue workers found the captain’s body and managed to evacuate six survivors. Five ships are currently searching for the three missing crew members. The ship carries 11 t of oil and is suspended upside down. It is being investigated whether the oil can be pumped from the ship without it getting in the sea.
