To create the best possible ship, one needs as many feasible designs as possible. Creating a design, however, costs a lot of time. Therefore, Bart van Oers created ‘Packing’, a quick way to create multiple feasible ship designs. His Packing method was awarded with the VNSI Timmersprijs last night at the Maritime Awards Gala.

Van Oers developed the method for his PhD at the TU Delft, which was financed by the Defence Materiel Organisation. The Packing method has already been applied for different kinds of service vessels such as frigats (Ministry of Defence), patrol vessels (US Coast Guard) and drilling vessels (GustoMSC). The method will be explored further at the TU Delft.

Nominated for the VNSI Timmersprijs

Mauk Tilanus was also nominated for the award with his design tool to optimise floating offshore wind turbines, which was his MSc-thesis. He performed his research on behalf of GustoMSC.
