The Amulet, Oleg Strashnov and Nemo H2 have been nominated for the KNVTS Ship of the Year Award 2011. The vessels are of Dutch design and are showpieces of the innovative quality of Dutch maritime industry. The award will be presented during the Maritime Awards Gala on 3 November 2011.
The KNVTS started with the Ship of the Year Award in 1998 to celebrate the organisation’s 100th anniversary. The award has since been presented every year to a technologically innovative ship designed and (largely) built in the Netherlands. A committee of independent experts judges the nominees and appoints the winner. The award consists of a model of an authentic flute ship. The Nominees
– The Amulet is an energy efficient and environmentally friendly inland vessel. It is a type C tanker that is 135 m long, 14.15 m wide and has a loading capacity of 6752 tonnes. It is meant for transportation of fuel oil and mineral oils. The ship has an advanced diesel electric installation combined with rudder propellers that reduces fuel consumption. In addition, the diesel engines have catalytic converters through which the installation complies with the Euro 5 trucking norm. This makes the ship considerably cleaner than is required by the CCR 2 norm for inland vessels. – The Oleg Strashnov has a lifting capacity of 5000 mt with a flight of 32 m. This makes it the largest mono-hull heavy-lift crane vessel in the world. The design is unique because when lifting heavy loads, the waterline width is 47 m (with a depth of almost 14 m) while the waterline width in transit condition is only 37.8 m (with a depth of almost 8.5 m). In addition, the ship can reach speeds of up to 14 knots with acceptable thruster power. In the future the ship can be equipped with a pipelaying installation. The ship has a DP3 system. – The Nemo H2 is the first ship built in the Netherlands that can sail emission free. The ship was designed by the joint venture Fuel Cell Boat Construction for Rederij Lovers. The Nemo H2 is 21.95 m long and can carry 86 passengers. Power is supplied by a fuel cell stack combined with batteries. When the ship does not sail on full power, the batteries are charged. These batteries can then supply extra power when needed. The hydrogen is contained in plastic cilinders under a pressure of 350 bar. Since use of this technology was not covered in existing regulations, Germanischer Lloyd was involved in the ship’s design and was responsible for its certification. The ship is used for cruises on the Amsterdam canals. For more information, please visit https://www.lovers.nl/co2zero/?gclid=CPz1_Pj9q6sCFYUOfAodHXf24Q[the Lovers website].
