The Maritime Knowledge Centre (MKC) started the Clean Seas network in 2010. The network’s activities take place in cooperation with the Platform Ships‘ Emissions. The goal is to stimulate the exchange of knowledge between industry and knowledge institutes. To do this Clean Seas will organise five meetings in the next six months.
According to the European Maritime Policy shipping needs to become greener. The EU wants maritime industry to accomplish sustainable growth, through addressing all a ship’s emissions, such as sound emissions under water and exotic species that may attach themselves on a ship’s hull.
Sustainable Development
Clean Seas’ goal is to stimulate sustainable development in maritime technology through joint development and making knowhow from research institutes, governments and maritime companies available.
About the Meetings
The meetings are meant for government, research institutes, shipyards, shipowners and suplliers. The dates and subjects are:
– 16 September: indexes for environmental achievements: use, necessity and further development
– 17 November: ships’ efficiency and air emissions: what regulations are coming and what is being developed?
– 15 December: sound under water: emissions, effects, measures and future policy
– 20 January: upcoming technologies to reduce emissions in water: what are urgent emissions and what technological solutions are available?
– 17 February: zero impact in coastal areas: what technology is needed to create an emission free ship?
The meetings consist of presentations on the latest technology and developments followed by discussions.
The Clean Seas MTN is financed from the Dutch Maritime Innovation Programme.
