The Merchant Maritime Warfare Centre (MMWC) has introduced a new training course designed to enable private security personnel from a wide variety of backgrounds to apply their skills to counter-piracy aboard merchant vessels.

The Surveillance and Training Officer (STO) courses will be held at the MMWC training facilites in Bournemouth and Portsmouth from 16th November 2009 and consist a mix of simulator, on-water and classroom training.

The new course bridges the knowledge gap between land based and maritime security, and is essential for those professional security personnel wanting to work at sea, in particular those aiming to provide unarmed onboard support and training to vessels transiting high risk areas. The course content covers all key areas of maritime security, including:
– The role of a Surveillance & Training Officer
– Understanding what makes a successful transit
– Maritime life onboard
– Risk analysis
– Effective planning, counter measures & defense tactics
– Emergency response procedures
