Security company Secure-Marine and offshore company Huisman have presented a new means of defending ships against pirates. A pipe installation on the ship’s railing can spray hot water on approaching attackers.

Through using the engine’s heat, sea water can be heated up to 85 degrees Celsius. When in danger of being hijacked, the captain can create a hot water curtain around his ship. Chemicals that irritate the eyes can also be added to the water.

The find was presented earlier this summer, but Secure-Marine’s director Raphael Kahn still needed a partner and builder. Huisman fulfilled this role. Kahn expects the system will be of particular interest to shipowners operating in the Gulf of Aden.
