A.P. Møller-Maersk Group has realised a nine per cent drop in CO2 emissions in 2008 in comparison to 2007. This represents a fall of 5 million tonnes of CO2 and has been achieved through lower fuel consumption on ships and reduced flaring from platforms.
The positive trend continues in 2009 in line with the Group’s new environmental strategy, which is now being implemented throughout the various business units. The significant CO2 reduction is one of the main results in the “Health, Safety, Security and Environment Report 2008” – a report, which the company has published for the second consecutive year. The 2008 report contains a number of improvements in performance and reporting.
Transport Segment
The transport segment, dominated by the container business in Maersk Line, is responsible for more than ninety per cent of the company’s fuel consumption. Still, ocean shipping is by far the most environmentally friendly way of transporting goods. Because of optimised usage of energy, the transport segment had a drop of eight per cent in fuel consumption despite increased business activity.
