Logistic Service Provider NYK has patented the design of a new container ship that reduces CO2 emissions by 69 per cent.

The ship, with the provisional (Japanese) name NYK Supaekoshippu, will be powered by a fuel cell and liquefied natural gas (LNG) instead of diesel or crude oil. The design also reduces water resistance, which requires less power. Furthermore, the ship will have sails for additional wind propulsion.

The ship will be 353 metres long and 54.6 metres wide and should be in use before 2030.
