Lloyd’s Register’s first Rules on Inland WaterWays Ships were published in the early eighties. Since then, much has changed. Therefore, Lloyd’s Register has now published a new edition.

A quarter of a century ago inland waterways shipping was not considered a core business for Lloyd’s Register. Nowadays, it is a major aspect within the European maritime scene, especially for Belgium and the Netherlands. Both the transport capacity and the characteristics of the cargo have changed. The transport of dangerous cargoes has become very important against the background of ever increasing safety demands. Involvement
These developments required a completely new edition of the Rules on inland waterways ships. Representatives from the industry (builders, consultants, Shipping Inspectorate, et cetera) have commented on earlier drafts of these Rules, in order to maintain and strengthen the link with current shipping and shipbuilding practice.
