From January to August 2007 the Chinese main ports have completed a cargo throughput of 3.447 billion tons, which was a 15.7 per cent increase compared to the corresponding period a year earlier. The containers’ throughput was 71.9706 million TEU, a 23.1 per cent increase.
Over 2007 China’s container throughput is expected to exceed 100 million TEU. The final numbers have yet to be presented.
A gap still remains between the existing port throughput capacity and the demands from domestic and foreign trade growth. Therefore, ports will continue to grow and possibly more ports will be created.
Apart from external expansion through extending port capacity, performance has to be improved. One of the most effective means to realise this, is to improve the rate of terminal operators.
