KNVTS will meet in person again for its annual Spring event, this time with The Great Bubble Barrier. We will have drinks in Amsterdam Noord and go on a boat ride, during which we will have the chance to follow part of the operation of the Bubble Barrier system currently installed in Amsterdam Westerdok.
The Great Bubble Barrier’s mission is to clean rivers and canals from plastic, ultimately preventing them from reaching the oceans. Their method consists of a screen of air bubbles created by air pumped through perforated tubes liying on the bottom of the waterway, which directs plastic waste towards a catchment system at the quay. The Westerdok system was installed in 2019 in cooperation with the Regional Water Authority Amstel, Gooi and Vecht and the municipality of Amsterdam. It works 24h a day, 7 days a week, without hindering fishing or shipping.
More information on the event will be published on the KNVTS website.
