KNVTS lecture: Wind load measurements and wind load predictions of large ships in open sea and in harbours

February 19 @ 19:30 - 22:00

In the lecture the results of the WINDLASS Joint Industry Project (Wind Loads And Securing Ships) will be presented. The objective of WINDLASS JIP is a better modelling of the 3D wind field and wind loads on high-windage vessels in ports, locks, waterways and at exposed terminals.

The need for this is given by the fact that large wind loads on ships increasingly give rise to practical problems and risk for incidents. This is due to e.g. the ongoing growth of vessel sizes, the increasing occurrence of “exposed” port sites with coastal conditions, and last but not least climate change.

Additional knowledge about wind loads on ships is considered helpful to enable a safer vessel operation in ports and waterways, but will also support engineering analysis/design and navigation training.
