KNVTS lecture: Lithium Ion batteries on board, how to manage the risks?

There is a growing demand for the use of Lithium Ion batteries for power support or shared/full electric propulsion. FiFi4Marine has about 90MWh of marine Lithium Ion batteries in use, certified by DNV, RINA and LLoyd’s. How to deal with redundancy and a potential risk of thermal runaway and if, how to extinguish this complex fire load is a challenge, but mitigation measures exist.

Videos will be shared showing the aggressive and rapid development of a fire load with Lithium Ion batteries, the presentation will cover aging/degradation vs passive safety levels of batteries. Not only fire laboratory results will be shown, but also a thermal runaway aboard an all-electric ferry in daily operation.
