Engineers call it a 50,000 tonnes pocket knife and its versatility has now been acknowledged: Heerema Marine Contractors’ Aegir has won the KVNR Shipping Award 2013.
Heerema Marine Contractors has taken delivery of its new Deepwater Construction Vessel Aegir that can perform pipelaying, heavy construction and heavy lifting projects at the same time. The ship was built to Ulstein Sea of Solutions SOC 5000 design.
The ship can switch pipe reels on location and can work in water depths of up to 3500 m. As the ship can stay on location and combine different projects at once, it saves time and reduces the need of other ships.
'International Regulations Have Trouble Keeping Up'
The award was presented by jury president Tineke Netelenbos at the Maritime Awards Gala that took place 31 October at “De Broodfabriek” in Rijswijk, the Netherlands. Just before the award she emphasised just how innovative Dutch maritime industry is: 'We are so innovative at times, that international regulations have trouble keeping up.' This award is in recognition of those innovative efforts.
The other four nominees were:
- Flinter, Borchard Lines, PPG – Charterer, ship owner and supplier together invest in antifouling
- Management Facilities Group – Sparing the environment and saving money by becoming conscious of energy usage
- Seazip Offshore Services – Stable twin-axe crew tenders
