To be able to transport ever heavier project shipments, Dockwise designed a semi-submersible bowless heavy lift vessel: the Dockwise Vanguard. The award was presented at last night’s Maritime Awards Gala at Studio 21 in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
President of the jury, Tineke Netelenbos, called the ship ‘a true technical innovation. No other ship has ever been designed like this one.’ Because the vessel does not have a conventional bow and the accommodation is placed completely on starboard side, the available deck space equals the size of the ship. The ship will be 275 m long and 70 m wide and can carry loads up to 110,000 t. The ship is currently being built in Korea and is expected to be delivered at the end of 2012. Production costs amount to 240 million dollars.
Nominated: Stichting ProSea – New IMO Course Marine Environment Awareness
Last night, Stichting ProSea received extra compliments from the KVNR jury for its environmental awareness course. After a ten year lobby, the course was acknowledged by IMO and made part of IMO’s STCW-Code. The course is now a compulsory part of maritime education.
Nominated: Sima Charters – Multi-Purpose Tenders
Because regular tenders were to limited in their use, Sima Charters designed three multi-purpose tenders. Due to their deck capacity, the vessels are suitable for tender work as well as for offshore installation projects. The vessels are 18 m long and have a strengthened and sharp shaped bow to dampen waves, increase comfort and to prevent hard landings from causing damage.
Nominated: Tideway Offshore Contractors – Fallpipe and Offshore Multi-Purpose Vessel Flintstone
With the Flintstone Tideway has created an allround offshore vessel. The high tech fallpipe vessel can precisely place rocks in a depth of up to 2000 m, a record that formerly lay at 987 m, due to new fallpipe technology. The ship can also be used for cable laying and deepsea mining.
