SUMMARY:KNVTS lecture: AlViVi - Breakthrough digitalisation platform
DESCRIPTION:To innovate for customers\, Alewijnse sought to solve one of the largest challenges for the maritime industry — simplifying the IT architecture required to operate multiple\, critical ship systems in a constrained space.  \n\n\n\nRather than deploy and manage individual IT architectures spread across the vessel for each control system for propulsion\, energy\, navigation\, communications\, electrical\, security\, and others\, Alewijnse developed AlViVi (Alewijnse Virtualisation and Visualisation)\, a breakthrough digitalisation platform to consolidate process-related systems for dredging\, industry\, navy\, offshore and yachts.  \nThe innovative virtualisation and visualisation (AlViVi) platform acts as a central hub\, centralising and integrating all the process systems\, and distributing the visualisation of the data to all networked screens on board. Alewijnse is the first to achieve this and is the only company currently able to offer a fully digitalised platform to the maritime market. The first seven AlViVi systems have already been successfully installed on several dredging vessels. \nAlViVi additionally provides unique simulation capabilities for training and testing during the design phase of on-board automation systems. Through the recent collaboration with 3D simulation specialist Tree C Technology\, Alewijnse is taking this a step further. The specialist software of Tree C adds 3D realism to the simulation of interactions with the environment and the forces at play\, providing a realistic experience and a suitable virtual environment. This provides a realistic experience for trainee operators and makes the virtual environment suitable as an accurate test environment for new equipment and control systems. It creates unique opportunities for education\, engineering\, surveys and live monitoring service using visualisation and augmented reality. \nSpeaker: Johan van Rikxoort\, Product Manager at Alewijnse

SUMMARY:KNVTS lecture: A precautionary approach to developing nodule collector technology
DESCRIPTION:The basis of GSR’s research and development (R&D) strategy was developed in 2013 following a desktop study which defined an integrated concept of operation. \nA key component of the deep seabed mining system is the Seafloor Nodule Collector (SNC). The SNC has a significant influence on the overall operational environmental impact and on the achievable production rate\, two criteria that are critical in developing a responsible mining operation. Additionally\, given commercial deep-seabed mining operations are unprecedented\, the SNC is the sub-system involving the highest number of information and knowledge gaps\, such as the environmental impacts and effects\, its response to soil characteristics\, trafficability and nodule collection methodology. \nHence\, from all the systems identified\, GSR decided to focus its first efforts on the SNC system and more specifically on a pre-prototype of a SNC. This feasibility study consisted of a step-by-step approach and culminated in the design\, building and testing of a pre-prototype SNC\, called Patania II (PATII). \nFollowing the successful trials conducted with Patania II at 4\,500 m water depth in the CCZ in 2021\, the final phase will commence\, which will culminate in a trial of a commercial-scale SNC. GSR remains committed to responsible deep-sea research and technology development\, one step at a time. \nPlease register in advance by sending an e-mail to: j.broekhuijsen@damennaval.com \nSpeakers: \n\nKris De Bruyne – Project Manager GSR – Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (member of the DEME group)\nHarm Stoffers – Design Manager GSR – Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (member of the DEME group)

SUMMARY:KNVTS webinar: Arctic shipping
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Björn von Ubisch\, Director Ubitec BV / This webinar will be in Dutch. \nAs part of a KNVTS-wide initiative\, the various departments have joined forces with the aim of organising a webinar at least once every quarter that ties in with a recent SWZ|Maritime special. \nAs the first of this initiative\, the Rotterdam department will facilitate a webinar linked to the January issue of SWZ|Maritime with the theme “Arctic shipping”. Mr. Von Ubisch will explain the recent developments in the Arctic and respond to current events. \nThe other departments will follow this up with a webinar on another SWZ theme later in the year\, hoping to continue offering interesting lectures and current affairs to members and other interested parties. \nThe webinar will be recorded. After the presentation there will be a half hour for questions and answers. Link for registration will soon be available on the KNVTS website (no deadline for registration).
