Er werden slechts vier commerciële vrachtschepen en een handvol nucleaire ijsbrekers gebouwd. Al deze schepen werken op reactortypes die inmiddels als “ouder” worden beschouwd.\nNieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van kernenergie (zoals kleine modulaire reactoren en het gebruik van thorium als brandstof) laten een aanzienlijk potentieel zien voor de mogelijke ontwikkeling van een nieuwe commerciële scheepstoepassing. \nVoortstuwingssystemen op basis van kernenergie moeten worden gezien als enorm verschillend van de conventionele vaartuigen op basis van brandstof\, met duidelijke voordelen (geen uitstoot via de pijp en zeer hoge energiedichtheid)\, maar ook nadelen (afvalproductie\, kosten en complexiteit van de installatie). Deze fijne kneepjes en verschillen zullen worden gepresenteerd. \nSpreker: Ir. Koen Houtkoop\, studeerde af op kernenergie voor maritieme toepassingen.
