SUMMARY:KNVTS lecture: Submarine construction in the Netherlands – Challenges for the Navy and industry
DESCRIPTION:A new weapon emerged after 1900: the submarine\, made possible by the combination of an entirely new power source\, the diesel engine\, an already somewhat older technology\, electricity in the form of batteries and electric motor\, and finally a hull whose steel now had to withstand no small water pressure. \nThis lecture will examine some of the technical aspects required to successfully take submarines to sea. It will cover the Dutch submarine family tree both before and after the second worldwar. Technological developments in materials\, calculation methods\, and practical testing have proven indispensable for the development of submarines. \nThe courage of designers and navies to apply new technologies has proven to be essential in this regard. DESCRIPTION:From 9-10 October 2025 the 17th Mannheim Conference on Inland Navigation Law will take place in Strasbourg\, France. \nThe very 1st Mannheim Conference on Inland Navigation Law took\nplace on June 11-12\, 1975 in the Rosengarten in Mannheim. The idea of dealing with current problems of inland navigation law at conferences arose from the previously unsuccessful attempt to found an institute for inland navigation law\, which was not realized until 1996. \nThe response to the first conference was remarkable. The great success encouraged a continuation. In the meantime\, the conferences on current developments and problems of inland navigation law\, which are held every three years\, have become a permanent institution. \nThis year marks a significant milestone in the conference’s history. For the first time\, the Mannheim Conference will be held in English\, broadening its reach to a wider international audience. Hosted in Strasbourg\, this special edition is made possible through the collaboration of the University of Mannheim\, the CCNR\, GBM and IVR. \nBy expanding its linguistic and geographical scope\, the Mannheim Conference reaffirms its commitment to advancing the field of inland navigation law and facilitating global dialogue among key stakeholders.

SUMMARY:KNVTS lecture: TNO’s view on circularity of wind turbines
DESCRIPTION:To meet the EU’s 2050 climate-neutral goals\, wind turbines must become circular\, especially focusing on sustainable recycling of composite blades. Current methods like landfilling and incineration are not viable\, and there is no cost-effective large-scale recycling solution yet. WindEurope expects blade waste to grow from 60 kton/year in 2025 to 800 kton/year in 2050. In the Netherlands\, over 1\,955 offshore turbines with 5\,865 blades (260 kton of composite) are expected by 2030. \nTNO is launching the CIRCLE4WIN project to develop a scalable and cost-efficient end-of-life solution for offshore blades using thermolysis to recover glass fibers. Success depends on improving cutting\, pre-treatment\, logistics\, and material transparency—supported by a Digital Product Passport (DPP). The project also explores future blade designs using bio-based materials\, detachable parts\, and longer lifespans. \nDuring this lecture\, the options for enabling circularity for wind turbines will be discussed. \nSpeaker: Dr. ir.
