SUMMARY:RINA Technical Conference: Managing CII and Associated Challenges
DESCRIPTION:As part of its commitment to addressing climate change\, the IMO has been working on the development of a Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) for international shipping. The CII is intended to measure the carbon efficiency of ships and assess their relative carbon emissions performance. \nThe concept of the CII was introduced in the IMO’s Initial Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships\, adopted in 2018. The strategy sets out a vision to reduce total annual greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. \nThe CII is being developed as a key tool to assess and monitor the carbon intensity of ships\, providing a standardized and transparent measure for evaluating their energy efficiency and emissions performance. It is expected to be a dynamic indicator that can be updated periodically to reflect technological advancements and best practices. \nThe CII requirements will take effect from 2023\, so in 2024 the industry is expecting to receive the first feedback of CII measure. The Royal Institution of Naval Architects is proposing the technical conference to gather key stakeholders of the maritime industry to discuss challenges and opportunities of this measure.

DESCRIPTION:Please note this event will be in Dutch. \nKernenergie wordt op grote schaal gebruikt in commerciële energiecentrales en scheepvaarttoepassingen\, maar de commerciële maritieme voortstuwing is nooit van de grond gekomen. Er werden slechts vier commerciële vrachtschepen en een handvol nucleaire ijsbrekers gebouwd. Al deze schepen werken op reactortypes die inmiddels als “ouder” worden beschouwd.\nNieuwe ontwikkelingen op het gebied van kernenergie (zoals kleine modulaire reactoren en het gebruik van thorium als brandstof) laten een aanzienlijk potentieel zien voor de mogelijke ontwikkeling van een nieuwe commerciële scheepstoepassing. \nVoortstuwingssystemen op basis van kernenergie moeten worden gezien als enorm verschillend van de conventionele vaartuigen op basis van brandstof\, met duidelijke voordelen (geen uitstoot via de pijp en zeer hoge energiedichtheid)\, maar ook nadelen (afvalproductie\, kosten en complexiteit van de installatie). Deze fijne kneepjes en verschillen zullen worden gepresenteerd. \nSpreker: Ir. Koen Houtkoop\, studeerde af op kernenergie voor maritieme toepassingen. Momenteel werkt hij als naval architect & technical superintendent voor A2B-Online Ship Management.
