SUMMARY:KNVTS Spring Event
DESCRIPTION:KNVTS will meet in person again for its annual Spring event\, this time with The Great Bubble Barrier. We will have drinks in Amsterdam Noord and go on a boat ride\, during which we will have the chance to follow part of the operation of the Bubble Barrier system currently installed in Amsterdam Westerdok. \n\n\n\nThe Great Bubble Barrier’s mission is to clean rivers and canals from plastic\, ultimately preventing them from reaching the oceans. Their method consists of a screen of air bubbles created by air pumped through perforated tubes liying on the bottom of the waterway\, which directs plastic waste towards a catchment system at the quay. The Westerdok system was installed in 2019 in cooperation with the Regional Water Authority Amstel\, Gooi and Vecht and the municipality of Amsterdam. It works 24h a day\, 7 days a week\, without hindering fishing or shipping. \nMore information on the event will be published on the KNVTS website.

SUMMARY:KNVTS lecture: A precautionary approach to developing nodule collector technology
DESCRIPTION:The basis of GSR’s research and development (R&D) strategy was developed in 2013 following a desktop study which defined an integrated concept of operation. \nA key component of the deep seabed mining system is the Seafloor Nodule Collector (SNC). The SNC has a significant influence on the overall operational environmental impact and on the achievable production rate\, two criteria that are critical in developing a responsible mining operation. Additionally\, given commercial deep-seabed mining operations are unprecedented\, the SNC is the sub-system involving the highest number of information and knowledge gaps\, such as the environmental impacts and effects\, its response to soil characteristics\, trafficability and nodule collection methodology. \nHence\, from all the systems identified\, GSR decided to focus its first efforts on the SNC system and more specifically on a pre-prototype of a SNC. This feasibility study consisted of a step-by-step approach and culminated in the design\, building and testing of a pre-prototype SNC\, called Patania II (PATII). \nFollowing the successful trials conducted with Patania II at 4\,500 m water depth in the CCZ in 2021\, the final phase will commence\, which will culminate in a trial of a commercial-scale SNC. GSR remains committed to responsible deep-sea research and technology development\, one step at a time. \nPlease register in advance by sending an e-mail to: j.broekhuijsen@damennaval.com \nSpeakers: \n\nKris De Bruyne – Project Manager GSR – Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (member of the DEME group)\nHarm Stoffers – Design Manager GSR – Global Sea Mineral Resources NV (member of the DEME group)

SUMMARY:KNVTS lecture: AlViVi - Breakthrough digitalisation platform
DESCRIPTION:To innovate for customers\, Alewijnse sought to solve one of the largest challenges for the maritime industry — simplifying the IT architecture required to operate multiple\, critical ship systems in a constrained space.  \n\n\n\nRather than deploy and manage individual IT architectures spread across the vessel for each control system for propulsion\, energy\, navigation\, communications\, electrical\, security\, and others\, Alewijnse developed AlViVi (Alewijnse Virtualisation and Visualisation)\, a breakthrough digitalisation platform to consolidate process-related systems for dredging\, industry\, navy\, offshore and yachts.  \nThe innovative virtualisation and visualisation (AlViVi) platform acts as a central hub\, centralising and integrating all the process systems\, and distributing the visualisation of the data to all networked screens on board. Alewijnse is the first to achieve this and is the only company currently able to offer a fully digitalised platform to the maritime market. The first seven AlViVi systems have already been successfully installed on several dredging vessels. \nAlViVi additionally provides unique simulation capabilities for training and testing during the design phase of on-board automation systems. Through the recent collaboration with 3D simulation specialist Tree C Technology\, Alewijnse is taking this a step further. The specialist software of Tree C adds 3D realism to the simulation of interactions with the environment and the forces at play\, providing a realistic experience and a suitable virtual environment. This provides a realistic experience for trainee operators and makes the virtual environment suitable as an accurate test environment for new equipment and control systems. It creates unique opportunities for education\, engineering\, surveys and live monitoring service using visualisation and augmented reality. \nSpeaker: Johan van Rikxoort\, Product Manager at Alewijnse

SUMMARY:KNVTS webinar: Mass production enabled design – The Moray Base
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Christiaan Schuiling\, Maridea BV. This lecture will be given in English. \nThe market potential for floating offshore wind is huge\, but only if floating wind is capable of producing at competitive levelised cost of energy (LCOE) in line with alternative green energy sources. Achieving a competitive cost level requires a highly efficient process from production to transport and installation and a high turbine efficiency. Economics of scale must be exploited; the wind turbines will therefore increase in size and the number of installed floating units will be high. This has been the driver of the design of the Moray Base. To reduce LCOE\, reduction of the capital expenditure (CAPEX) of the unit is required. \nMass production of the floater and turbine erection is therefore a necessity. Like the bottom fixed monopile\, floating foundations should be produced\, assembled\, and installed in series. The Moray Base is a floating wind foundation suitable for turbines of 15 MW developed by Maridea. For mass production\, the Moray Base leans on existing and proven industrialised monopile manufacturing and utilises the inherent mobility of a floating structure during its final assembly like an assembly line in a factory. \nIn view of mass production\, the Moray Base is a most promising design for several reasons: \n\nProduction of the sections is industrialised to a high degree. Traditional shipbuilding processes are avoided. A cost effective “monopile fabrication” process is applied for the bulk of the structure.\nEasily transportable sections by general cargo ships.\nSeries-assembly of the sections and turbine erection afloat in a harbour close to the project location with shore-based equipment enabling local content.\nIt is highly scalable for future designs of turbines.\nThe complete life cycle avoids the use of drydocks\, which are expensive\, limited in availability and might restrict sizing.\n\nAlthough most of the steelwork is performed in a dedicated factory\, the still large scope of assembly and turbine erection allows for local content. \nBesides efficient fabrication\, the large diameter and thick-walled tubes deal easily with the turbine loads during severe storms and maximum turbine thrust. The long radius segmented elbows have superior strength and fatigue behaviour compared to the joints of traditional submersibles or truss floaters. This makes the structure less prone to fatigue and hence requires limited inspections and avoids offshore repairs. The corner location of the turbine allows for access with crane vessels for turbine repair and maintenance. \nThe webinar will be recorded. After the presentation\, there will be a half hour for Q&A. To register\, please use the link on the KNVTS website agenda.

SUMMARY:KNVTS Lecture: Digital 3D excursion on board ASRV Nuyina
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is in Dutch. \nDigitale 3D excursie aan boord van ASRV Nuyina\, organised by the KNVTS Afdeling Zeeland.
